TheKeyLaboratory of Bionics Engineering (Ministry of Education)of Jilin Universityrelies ontheDivision-Head level department of Agricultural Mechanization Engineering State Key Discipline in Jilin University, whichis aBionics Engineering Research Base that specializes inscientific researching, technological development, achievement transformation, talentcultivation, discipline construction, and international cooperation andcommunication.
The predecessor of theKeyLaboratory was “The Opening Key Laboratory for Terrain-Machine Bionics Engineering Department” approved by the former Ministry of Machinery Industry in 1992. It was opened to the public in 1993.
After theapproval ofthe Ministry of Educationin 2000, theKey Laboratory for Terrain-Machine Bionics Engineering Education Departmentwas established. From 2000 to 2007,academician Chen Bingcongchairedthe Honorary Director of the Academic Committee. In the meantime,academicianRenLuquanisthe Director of the Academic Committee, and Professor Tong Jinis the Director of the Laboratory.
With the continuous expansion of research fields, the key laboratory was renamedas“TheKey Laboratory of BionicsEngineering of Ministry of Education”in 2009.At that time,academicianRenLuquan served as theDirector of theAcademicCommittee. From 2008 to 2013, Professor Li Jianqiaowas appointedas theLaboratoryDirector. From 2014 to present, Professor Han Zhiwutake the position of the Laboratory Director.
In 2011,afterthe approval of the National Development and Reform Commission, the “BionicsEngineering National-local Joint Laboratory” wasfound.AcademicianRenLuquanistheDirector of theTechnicalCommittee. From 2011 to 2013, Professor Li Jianqiao served as theLaboratoryDirector. From 2014 to present, Professor Han Zhiwuis theLaboratoryDirector.
With the approval of the Ministry of Education and the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, the “Bionic Engineering Technology and High-end Equipment Innovation and Intelligence Induction Base”discipline innovation and talents induction base of the institution ofHighereducation(Plan 111)wasestablished. It has been funded1.8 million annually forfiveconsecutive years.
Approved by the Ministry of Education in 2017, thedisciplinegroup “Mechanical and Bionic Engineering” wasallowed to beone of the six independent construction disciplines (groups)planned and designed by Jilin University for“Double First-Class”project, withAcademicianRenLuquan as the head of thedisciplinegroup.
The key laboratory implements the director responsibility system under the guidance of the academic committee. The laboratory academic committee is composed offifteenscholars, includingsixacademicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
The key laboratory isaimedtoorient towardsthe needs of the countryandcreate a first-class team,it alsoadhere to interdisciplinaryand target onthe international frontier, takingnatural approach as the core, and carryingout basic research on the application ofbionicsengineering.
The laboratory has formed anexcellentacademic team withthe leading scholaracademicianRen Luquanat the core and withprofessors and doctoral supervisorsas the hard coreandwithmiddle-agedand youngdoctors as the backbone.The key laboratory has 75 personnel on the regular payroll at present.Among them, there are 72 personnelworking forresearch and technique, including 36 professors (researchers), 20 associate professors (senior engineers), 7 lecturers and engineers, and 62 teachers with doctoral degrees. Among the regular staff, there are one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, two members of the former Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council and one member of the current Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, one national young and middle-aged expert with outstanding contributions, two recipients of the National Outstanding Young Scientists Foundation, one lecture professor, three Tang Aoqing Distinguished Professors of Jilin University, andtwonational candidatesof the Ten Million Talents Project of the New Century (first and second level candidates) ,tworecipients of the Ministry of Education’s cross (new) century outstanding talent cultivation program fund,threerecipients of the Ministry of Education’s outstanding young teachers fund,Three backboneteachers of the Ministry of Education,twosenior experts of Jilin Province,fiveprofessional and technical talents with outstanding contributions in Jilin Province,threerecipients of the Jilin Province Outstanding Youth Fund, andthreeChangbai MountainScholars. There is one innovation team in key fields of the Ministry of Science and Technology, two teams of major scientific and technological R&D talents in Jilin Province, and three teams of scientific and technological innovation in Jilin Province.
